Interpret Durban 4 or ID4 was big news here this last weekend.  Over the past few weeks, artitists have been working on photogaphy, video and T-shirt design submissions.   It was big news for me personally, as I submitted a work for the art exhibition and was chuffed to be awarded 3rd prize in the Open Art section.

Have you heard of Cathcart William Methven before?  I've  just learnt that he was an amazing chap.  These delightful sketches of Durban and its Harbour are only one of his many achievements.

 

The envelope that houses these postcard reproductions states that he was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and  Engineer in Chief of the Natal Harbour Board. 

Interpret Durban

I am passionate about my home city Durban, and fascinated with the creative talent that we have here too.   

So last night was a very good evening to experience both.  Streetscene Alternative Tours hosted an Interpret Durban T-shirt Competition at the Colomba Coffee Factory in Durban.

Saturday was an incredible day for me as I joined Streetscene Tours to do a tour of Kwa Mashu [Marshall's Place] just outside Durban.The first stop was Elephant House, the oldest house in Durban!

Next stop was Kwa Mashu - I never realsied what a significant place it is.  I thoroughly enjoyed being up close and personal with the Township and it's residents. We visited all sorts of places like the Gandhi Museum,

The Markets of Warwick

Last week we went on a tour of the Markets of Warwick.
It was an incredible experience.  It opened up an area of inner city Durban to me.

 

Refreshing and Inspiring

My daughters and I had a special time on Saturday morning as we coffee'd and shopped in Davenport - an older vibey suburb of Durban.The atmosphere is great. We started at Bean Green with arguably the best coffee in Durbs at the moment!

Bean Green

As you may know by now, I am passionate about excellent coffee, which is one of the reasons I owned a quirky coffee shop for a couple of years!So I was delighted to visit the Bean Green Coffee Roastery in Davenport Durban yesterday. It's a long time since I have had such a stunning cup of coffee!It is one of those places that intrigue me. There are a lot of reasons why it could not work - a limited menu, few staff and simple decor. But that is exactly why it does work. The place was crowded, the service really friendly and of course, the coffee was excellent! The background music comes from a record player! When we left, some of the customers greeted us too, and told us we must come back again! A lovely vibe all round. It definitely has the x-factor!

Coffee at the Corner Cafe in Glenwood, Durban is fun enough, but this time we had the added delight of being surrounded by Claire Regnard's works of art. Her lasercut metal work is very appealing and I am planning on taking my husband there soon to have a look!Visit Clare's web sight to see more about her shop Amoeba Lighting and Living and the work she does!

Just love the functional and elegant aspects of the Corner Cafe! Somehow the pile of serviettes being freshly ironed adds to the atmosphere! Have a look at their brand new web sight!

Round and Round

We have lived in Durban for around 15 years now, and it has taken us this long to visit the Roma Revolving Restaurant. We had a few family milestones to celebrate - so we thought we would give it a try. I have never been to a revolving restaurant before. We really enjoyed ourselves. The secret was to arrive just before the sun set

Sustainable Designs

My daughter and I fortunately caught the tail end of the inaugural SUSS'T exhibition at at the KZNSA Gallery in Durban yesterday. It is the result of a partnership between the KZNSA and Design Indaba and catalogues and exhibits the broad wealth of design and creativity inherent in South Africa! [I did snap away, but the only reasonable pic I came home with was of the Zenzulu works on the staircase!]
